The English Program is designed for students who want to increase their English proficiency quickly and effectively for academic, professional or social purposes. Forum’s integrated communicative approach focuses on dialogues, role-plays, simulations and other interactive techniques that bridge the gap between knowing and using language structures in appropriate contexts. This program works on improving reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills.

 

The Semi-Intensive English Program focuses on general English for social and professional purposes with an emphasis on English for the workplace. This program provides a concise overview of critical language skills that can be used in a variety of settings. Although the Semi-Intensive program is not as comprehensive as the Intensive Program, learners will have a strong foundation of language use in various settings.

Program Information

This program works on improving reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar and vocabulary skills.

LEVELS

The Semi-Intensive program consists of 10 levels: Intro, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Superior each of which are divided into two sub-levels.

Students are placed into the appropriate level according to the results of the placement test. Each level is 8 weeks long and provides 96 hours of instruction with 12 hours of study per week. Classes are held three hours every day Monday through Thursday from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 

The Semi-Intensive program is a non-credit program offered all year-round. Please call or e-mail to check the availability of levels and class times; the levels and class times offered will depend on the enrollment for each session.

INTRO LEVEL 1

This fundamental level establishes survival level proficiency. Students develop basic speech patterns and vocabulary to have simple conversational exchanges. Students learn how to introduce themselves and others, ask and answer questions on biographical information, houses, time and weather. Students also develop basic writing skills to write a short paragraph with simple sentences.

INTRO LEVEL 2

This level develops basic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to enable students to conduct everyday errands. Students obtain language and skills to perform a range of errands including ordering food, going to the doctor and going to a restaurant. Students also develop the reading and writing skills to read and compose advertisements and personal messages.

BEGINNER  LEVEL 1

This level further develops fluency and strengthens speech patterns by helping students understand and practice short informal dialogues. Students also begin to develop a core grammar foundation to express opinions on daily and past events and discuss upcoming plans. Students expand their vocabulary to function in everyday activities, ask more detailed questions and write a basic descriptive paragraph.  

BEGINNER LEVEL 2

This level begins to develop a better understanding of grammar categories and begin to develop their ability to organize their ideas in presentations and writing. Students will be able to present on their background in a short, structured presentation and also describe their families in an organized and outlined writing passage.  Students will also simulate listening passages related to everyday tasks. 

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 1

In this level, students will expand their vocabulary and begin bridging the gap between knowing and using grammar structures in the appropriate contexts. Students will be able to talk about more complex topics such as special events, urban life, and technology, give simple instructions on how to do something, and make complaints and comparisons. Students will also gradually begin to develop their professional writing and presentation skills.

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2

In this level, students will be exposed to more contemporary materials and be able to express more complex ideas in speaking and writing. Students will also learn how to express wishes, describe abilities and skills, compare time periods and speculate about past and future events both in speaking and in writing. Students will learn to listen, understand and summarize interviews, talks and video materials presented in specific contexts and recognize main ideas and speakers’ suggestions. This level also focuses on developing narrative writing skills.

ADVANCED LEVEL 1

This level begins to develop creative presentation and descriptive writing skills. Students will learn storytelling skills and discuss different personalities and careers, learning methods and cultural encounters. Students will be able to comprehend longer conversations and talks as well as descriptive reading passages by identifying main ideas and inferences. This level also works on descriptive writing with a focus on organization and presenting ideas in a chronological order.

ADVANCED LEVEL 2

This level enables students to understand and summarize authentic listening and reading materials, converse on more complex contemporary matters, take a stand in speaking and writing and focus on grammar usage to improve accuracy in speaking and writing. In this level, students will acquire knowledge on contemporary issues enabling them to discuss a range of complex and controversial topics with more accuracy. Students will also develop their professional writing skills with more expansive vocabulary and stronger structure.

SUPERIOR LEVEL 1

This level focuses heavily on establishing familiarity of business language and advanced grammar. Students will understand social etiquette in the work place and cultural differences. Students will also explore a range of discussion topics that will help students develop a high-level vocabulary and idiomatic expressions and fine-tune language use to build confidence in speaking, reading, writing and understanding English in professional and formal settings.

SUPERIOR LEVEL 2

In this level, students refine their abilities in stating their positions on a variety of topics utilizing specialized vocabulary and precise language use when expressing themselves in debates, presentations and writing. Students will develop strong critical thinking and discourse skills by participating in dynamic discussions on a wide range of multifaceted topics. Students will also clearly understand the difference between grammar categories and concepts and use them meaningfully while correcting their errors in speaking and writing.
